Neurobiological Poverty Traps

چکیده

Poverty remains one of the most pressing problems facing the world. In this paper, I review evidence suggesting that poverty has particular neurobiological consequences, and that these consequences in turn lead to suboptimal economic behaviors which exacerbate and perpetuate poverty. Speci cally, I argue that poverty raises levels of the stress hormone cortisol, causes dysregulation and altered gene-environment interactions in serotonergic neurotransmission, and leads to increased levels of testosterone. These neurobiological e ects impair executive function and exacerbate behavioral biases in economic choice, and thus contribute to the perpetuation of poverty. - 1 - Poverty traps and Nonlinear Income Dynamics with Measurement Error and Individual Heterogeneity

Theories of poverty traps stand in sharp contrast to the view that anybody can make it through hard work and thrift. However, empirical detection of poverty traps is complicated by the lack of long panels, measurement error, and attrition. This paper shows how dynamic pseudo-panel methods can overcome these difficulties, allowing estimation of non-linear income dynamics and testing of the prese...

“Poor stays poor” Household asset poverty traps in rural semi-arid India

Although identifying the existence and the nature of household-level poverty traps would have important implications for the design of poverty reduction policies empirical evidence is still scant. A small, growing empirical literature has begun testing for poverty traps in the form of threshold points in non-linear welfare dynamics employing a variety of quantitative methods and producing a var...
